Cambria Weekend Getaway
Brandon and I took this little MLK Weekend Getaway in January and while we've been on this same trip in the past, we enjoyed it so much, it was a no brainer to go again. If I have any California readers, you might definitely be interested in checking out this little beach town.
Have you ever wondered what is in between the Bay Area and Los Angeles? Well, besides a whole lot of nothing in the middle of the state, the coastline along Highway 1 is as good as it gets. No crowds. No commercialism. Just pristine beaches, hippie surfers, and funky hole in the wall restaurants.
Cambria is about halfway between L.A. and San Jose and consists of Moonstone Beach as well as some great restaurants and a downtown area.
We stayed at The Blue Dolphin Inn, our favorite little beachside bed and breakfast. It is an adorable inn and really well-priced. For a holiday weekend it was only $140/night, which included a small view of the ocean, breakfast and a super comfy bed.
Some shots of the room. I love the details. Fancy chocolate. Fireplace. Plantation shutters.
But what I really loved was the breakfast. Of course I did. You fill out a door hanger menu with what you want and the next morning a picnic-ready breakfast arrives at your door.
We spent the first night walking along the boardwalk in front of the hotel and watching surfers catch waves (it was Mavericks Weekend and the waves were gnarly, dude).
The next day, we checked out a beach further down the road and was literally packed full of elephant seals and is maintained by The Friends of the Elephant Seals. I captured two of them fighting on video and accidentally deleted it :(
After checking out yet another beach/pier area, we had lunch at Sebastian's Store in San Simeon. Highly reccommend this place. Long lines of don't lie.
We shared the Gooney Bird sandwich and it was heavenly. BBQ sauce, pickles, bacon, cheese...
Next up, Hearst Castle Tour. Last time we were in Cambria we did the downstairs castle tour, so this time we chose the upstairs tour - of the bedrooms, library, and guest rooms.
Think Downton Abbey in real life.
On our way back to the Bay Area, we decided to take Highway 1 though Big Sur and Monterey. Amazing drive. Amazing getaway weekend.
